M-W’s Irvens Eristil one of defensive stars in Warwick win

There were plenty of stars on Monroe-Woodbury’s defense in Friday night’s 37-6 win over Warwick. One of them was DB Irvens Eristil. Eristil had an interception in the defensive clinic.

He also shut down the best WR this side of M-W’s Justin Kaffenberger, Warwick’s Brad Garcia. The Crusaders also shut down barreling Warwick RB Matt Weaver.

Also, definitely worth noting on M-W’s defense was DL’s Kenny Fee and Rob Kelly and DB John Mallon. A real nice job as a unit. The Crusaders were all over the place, picking off Warwick QB Brendan Waters three times.

Wallkill supports Chris Ripa after horrific leg injury

GOSHEN – Wallkill back-up defensive back Chris Ripa suffered a horrific right leg injury after picking off a pass with 2:30 remaining in the Panthers’ 42-12 Section 9 Class A win over Goshen.

Ripa suffered the injury after he came down with the ball and a Goshen player fell on him. The aftermath was so bad that Wallkill coaches instructed players not to look. The injury took place at the 7-yard line near Wallkill’s sideline. Ripa, a junior, could be heard screaming in pain. His leg was contorted.

He was taken by ambulance to Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. As Ripa was set to leave, his teammates surrounded the ambulance on the field to wish him well. Good stuff! Wallkill coach Brian Vegliando said Ripa will be evaluated at the hospital.

We wish Chris Ripa the best…..

1. Monroe-Woodbury (3-0): Like father, like son. New defensive coordinator Mike Connolly doing nice job, taking over for his dad, Bernie, now head coach. The Crusaders have allowed 13 points over the last two weeks and were all over the place against Warwick.

2. Newburgh (2-1): Yes, we know Newburgh lost to Warwick earlier this season, but the Goldbacks are starting to turn it on.

3. Warwick (2-1): By virtue of the 37-6 loss to M-W last Friday, Warwick had to be bumped from No. 2 to No. 3. Warwick pulls itself back together at Minisink Valley Friday.

4. Washingtonville (3-0): In my opinion, one of the biggest surprises in Section 9. That’s a compliment. We knew the Wizards would be good this year, but this good? First 3-0 start since 2005 with Valley Central on Friday.

5. Cornwall (3-0): Cornwall has more injuries than the Yankees, but still doing what it does best: Win!

6. Pine Bush (3-0): Started the year 3-0 last season, before losing to Kingston. Up next for Pine Bush? Kingston. Biggest game of the year for the Bushmen.

7. Kingston (1-2): The Tigers are seemingly right where they want to be. Kingston has opened the year 0-2 the last three seasons, reaching the AA playoffs in 2010-11.

8. Marlboro (3-0): Just call him “The Leg.” Kicker Adam Laubach hit a 47-yarder in a 35-0 win over Ellenville last Friday and nailed five touchbacks.

9. Wallkill (2-1): This one’s for Wallkill back-up DB Chris Ripa, who suffered a horrific leg injury in the closing minutes of Saturday’s Goshen game. It was almost shades of Lawrence Taylor’s famous hit on Joe Theismann, circa 1985. Feel better, Chris!

10. Spackenkill (3-0): Already counting down the days until Spackenkill at Marlboro on Sept. 28.

Cornwall’s Zsido and Grygiel break it down

Cornwall graduated 17 players from last year’s Section 9 Class A championship team – 10 on defense and seven on offense. And, early on this season, the Green Dragons have been hit with a variety of injuries.

The result? Cornwall is still Cornwall. The Green Dragons are 3-0 and opened their Class A schedule with a 41-7 win over Monticello last Saturday.

Expect Cornwall to roll Red Hook on Saturday at Middletown High’s Faller Field.

Must-win game for both teams: Kingston at Pine Bush

We have a big-time Section 9 Class AA Division I game lined up for Friday: Kingston at Pine Bush.

Loser goes home – as in doesn’t make the playoffs. With Monroe-Woodbury and Newburgh Free Academy looming for both teams, this is a must-win for both teams.

“This game means a lot to us,” said Pine Bush linebacker Brendan Brown. “We know how hard it will be to make the playoffs if we don’t beat Kingston. We’re going to give it everything we got and, hopefully, the results will speak for themselves.”

Pine Bush follows up Kingston with games at Monroe-Woodbury on Sept. 28 and Newburgh on Oct. 6. Kingston plays at Monroe-Woodbury on Oct. 5 and hosts Newburgh on Oct. 19.

“This is the first conference game, you don’t want to lose that game,” Kingston coach Jeramie Collins said.

For the second year in a row, Pine Bush, seeking its first win over Kingston in four years, enters this game 3-0. Kingston beat previously undefeated Pine Bush 18-12 at Dietz Stadium last year and the Bushmen only won one game after that. Kingston went on to make the Class AA playoffs.

Top 10 running backs in Section 9

Check out the list (based on performance this season and history):

1. Josh Villafane, Wallkill (508 yards, four touchdowns): A few words to describe Villafane – Tough. Durable. Fearless.

2. Matt Weaver, Warwick (566, 7): Monroe-Woodbury is likely the only team that will shut Weaver down. He could have another big win against Minisink Valley on Friday.

3. Anthony Dubose, Newburgh (276, 1): Only a sophomore, Dubose is the only player on this list who can say he played for a state championship and has an offer from Syracuse. His stats would be better if Newburgh wasn’t so deep in the backfield.

4. Francesco Pichardo, Washingtonville (431, 7): Another tough, physical runner, who is having a breakout year in Section 9.

5. Mike Martin, Pine Bush (344, 5): Speaking of breakout years. Martin missed most of last season with a broken collarbone. He’s on pace to go over 1,000 yards this season.

6. Khariff Laboy, New Paltz (358, 4): Laboy, a junior, has 2,224 rushing yards in three-plus years.

7. Mark Tooma, Monroe-Woodbury (235, 4): Warwick shut Tooma down last week, but the speedster should have some big AA games.

8. Matt Geisler, Pine Bush (237, 2): A prototypical football players. Geisler’s qualities include toughness and he’s selfless players.

9. Lawrence Young, Chester (520, 4): Put up his first of what could be many 200-yard games in his career against Millbrook last week. Young is a junior.

10. Jerry Nasi, O’Neill (293, 8): Nasi may not run for 1,786 yards like he did last year, but he’s going to probably go way over 1,000 for the defending Class C champs.

Five other RB’s to watch: Luke Zsido, Cornwall; Darryl Clark, New Paltz; Julian Vergeli, Washingtonville; Austin Beck, Marlboro, Kenny Jaycox, Liberty.

Pine Bush RB Matt Geisler on the big Kingston win

Matt Geisler is a football player’s football player. He’s tough and fearless, makes big plays and, most of all, loves all the action.

Geisler, a hard-charging running back, had 143 yards and two touchdowns in a 49-14 Section 9 Class AA Division I win over Kingston Friday night. It marked Pine Bush’s first win over Kingston in four years. Up next for the Bushmen?

They are at Monroe-Woodbury Friday. Pine Bush hasn’t beaten the Crusaders since 1995. Stay tuned for more on the big game this week.

Cornwall QB Mike White and DB Anthony Vega talk about Red Hook win

Cornwall overwhelmed Red Hook 56-14 in a non-league game on Saturday at Middletown’s Faller Field. White threw for 243 yards and four touchdowns – in the first half. Running back Luke Zsido had two touchdowns and Anthony Vega had two interceptions.

Cornwall looked good on both sides of the ball against an overmatched Red Hook team.

Top 10 defenses in Section 9

$

0

1. Newburgh (3-1): The Goldbacks have given up just six points as a unit over the last three weeks. Newburgh opened the season with a 28-27 loss to Warwick, but that was a new-look defense. The Goldbacks’ 2011 stifling defense was hit hard by graduation. Holdovers, including linebackers Hardcor Coleman and Mike Cerisano, and defensive back Jalen Williams, have helped the unit light it up over the last three weeks.

2. Monroe-Woodbury (4-0): The Crusaders put up, perhaps, the signature defensive performance of the season, shutting down Warwick and monster running back Matt Weaver 37-6 two weeks ago. Monroe-Woodbury has given up just 23 points over the last three weeks, after giving up 26 in an opening-week win over Binghamton. A deep secondary, including Irvens Eristil, John Mallon and Ricky Giraldo, have been key for Monroe-Woodbury. DL Ken Fee is a beast inside.

3. Pine Bush (4-0): Up front, Pine Bush could be as physical as any team in Section 9. The Bushmen, looking to shock Monroe-Woodbury on Friday, have allowed just 38 points. Only 24 of them have come against the first-team. Linebacker Brendan Brown, defensive tackle Delano “Caribbean” King, defensive back C.J. Weston and safety Matt Geisler have all been standouts.

4. Marlboro (4-0): Have posted two straight shutouts and allowed 13 points the previous week. Linebacker Matt Tamburri is one of the best in Section 9. Defensive backs Austin Beck and Ryan Cary are active, quick and, most of all, hard-hitting.

5. Washingtonville (4-0): Has been offensive powerhouse, but the defense is coming on. The Wizards have given up just 48 points, including seven off the third-team. Washingtonville has allowed just 14 points over the last two weeks. Standouts for the Wizards? Defensive back Jason Luther, defensive end Anthony Gentilcore and linebackers Dan O’Connell, Jeff Gonzalez and Mark Milisci. O’Connell competed for the starting quarterback job during preseason.

6. Cornwall (4-0): Lost, basically, its entire unit to graduation. Still, on defense, Cornwall continues to improve. Has allowed just 10 points per game. Like Anthony Vega at DB. Luke Zsido, Pat Landro and Jeff Grygiel make for a nice LB unit.

7. Wallkill (3-1): Traditionally, one of my favorite defenses to watch. Wallkill is intense, hard-hitting and swarms to the ball. The Panthers have allowed 22.7 points per game – high for Wallkill standards. I think Wallkill, also hit by graduation, will continue to tighten up as the year progresses.

8. New Paltz (3-1): Has given up just 29 points, including just nine over the last three weeks. Hosts Sullivan West on Friday.

9. James I. O’Neill (4-0): have allowed 19 points all year. LB Zach Trainor could play at any large school. Ditto DT Jordan Baskerville.

10. Sullivan West (4-0): Has allowed just 40 points this season. Quarterback/linebacker Sawyer Erlwein is, perhaps, the best two-way small school impact player in Section 9. He has four sacks. Defensive back Jared Meola has three picks.

Just missed: Minisink Valley (2-2) – Posted a shutout against Warwick last week. Could be coming on.

Top 10 Section 9 quarterbacks

$
0
0

(Based on performance through four games)

1. Kevin Carr, junior, Monroe-Woodbury: Right now, he’s the best two-way threat in Section 9. Carr can run and has developed a nice connection with WR Justin Kaffenberger. But we all knew that was coming. Carr followed Ryan Spelman, Danny Scalo and Greg Sullivan – all great M-W quarterbacks – but hasn’t flinched in the pressure spot.

2. Mike White, junior, Cornwall: The kid can chuck it. White is capable of going off at any moment with Alex Cruz and Chris Bauer running routes for him. White isn’t afraid of the big moment and may only get better as the season develops. #ice

3. Donovan Fields, junior, Newburgh: By far, the best athlete in the Top 10. I still don’t think Fields has reached his potential this year, which is a compliment. He’s quick, shifty and has a pretty good arm. #thedon

4. Joe Pillitteri, junior, Wallkill: What strikes me about Pillitteri is that he has this quiet confidence about. It’s an essential quality in a quarterback. Pillitteri is tough, can throw and is ready for prime time. That would be Cornwall at Wallkill next week.

5. Danny McNamara, junior, Pine Bush: Danny Mac isn’t flashy, but, in his first year, he’s shown he can manage the game well. He doesn’t make mistakes. Running backs Matt Geisler and Mike Martin do the majority of the running, but McNamara can eat up yards on the keeper. He plays within himself, which is important. Up next for Danny Mac? The bright lights of Pine Bush at Monroe-Woodbury Friday.

6. Sawyer Erlwein, senior, Sullivan West: I don’t care if Sullivan West is a small school. Erlwein is legit and I’d say, pound-for-pound, he’s not only one of the toughest quarterbacks in Section 9, but one of the toughest players. He runs over defenders and can pass.

7. Matt Poveromo, senior, Washingtonville: Poveromo could be a D-IAA tight end, but with Washingtonville running the ball like nobody’s business, he’s been reduced to primarily just a hand-off quarterback. Still, Poveromo does get in on the running game and has a good arm. His play has been selfless in the first half.

8. Sean Tirelli, senior, Minisink Valley: Another double threat. Tirelli can run the ball, is tough and elusive. He showed off his arm in last week’s 29-0 win over Warwick. Tirelli threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns.

9. Pat Dorrian, junior, Kingston: Has thrown for 636 yards this season with eight touchdowns and just one interception. Everyone knows Dorrian is going to Jerred Beniquez deep – and they still usually can’t stop them.

10. Evan Loughran, senior, Spackenkill: Loughran has put up 708 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns this year. He could be a difference maker in Spackenkill’s showdown with Marlboro on Friday.

1. Monroe-Woodbury (5-0): Monroe-Woodbury takes another step to returning to where it, seemingly, always belongs every year with a win vs. Kingston on Friday – the Class AA playoffs.

2. Newburgh (4-1): Newburgh senior RB Aaron Johnson, shot in the leg last Thursday night, was released from the hospital Saturday. He still hopes to play in junior college and Goldback Nation will be pulling for him.

3. Cornwall (5-0): Anyone know who Cornwall plays this week? Kidding. The Green Dragons travel to Wallkill to play the Panthers in, perhaps, the best rivalry in Section 9. Cornwall is seeking its first Class A regular-season win over Wallkill in three years.

4. Pine Bush (4-1): Pine Bush needs to beat visiting Newburgh on Saturday or the Bushmen are, basically, out of the Class AA playoffs.

5. Minisink Valley (3-2): Two weeks ago, Minisink Valley wasn’t even ranked. However, the Warriors are hot, coming off convincing wins against Warwick and Washingtonville. Minisink Valley now owns Class AA Division II.

6. Washingtonville (4-1): After last Friday’s Minisink Valley loss, Washingtonville’s season comes down to one game against Warwick on Oct. 19. Winner gets a Class AA playoff berth and loser is out.

7. Marlboro (5-0): Austin Beck turned into a “touchdown maker,” scoring all three TDs in a 21-14 Class B win versus Spackenkill last Friday. His 92-yard kickoff return for a TD was the highlight.

8. Wallkill (4-1): Expect Wallkill, already playing well, to kick it up a notch Friday against Cornwall. Don’t the Panthers always seem to play even better when they are staring down the Green Dragons.

9. Warwick (3-2): Sophomore Brendan Bauer and junior Brad Garcia split snaps at quarterback in a win vs. Kingston last Friday. Starting QB Brendan Waters was moved to the secondary.

10. New Paltz (4-1): Only blemish is a one-point loss to Spackenkill in the season opener. RBs Khariff Laboy (692 yards) and Darryl Clark (630) each have run for 100 yards in every New Paltz game.

I hit Wallkill practice to speak with some players about the big-time Section 9 Class A showdown with Cornwall on Friday. Wallkill (4-1, 3-0 Class A) hosts the Green Dragons (5-0, 2-0 Class A) at 7 p.m. in a rivalry that seemingly gets better with each game.

Cornwall avenged a loss in the 2010 Class A championship by beating Wallkill for the title in ’11. It also broke Cornwall’s three-game losing streak against the Panthers. Expect another classic. Stay tuned for more Wallkill-Cornwall coverage this week.

Pine Bush beat Newburgh for the first time since 1995 on Saturday and the Bushmen did it in style. Pine Bush put away the Goldbacks 41-0, scoring 34 points in the second half, and limiting Newburgh to 69 yards of offense. Wow!

Eller and Guzman were running hard all game.
